The original Chinook with his owner, Arthur Walden
A team of Chinooks with Perry Greene
The Chinook is a relatively new breed, developed throughout the 1900s to be a sturdy sledding dog capable of pulling freight or competing in races, while also being extremely affectionate and attached to their humans. Today, they still compete in pulling sports- sledding, joring, canicross, weight pull, etc, while also branching out into things like agility, tracking, obedience, scent work, and more. Above all, Chinooks are devoted family dogs who want to be with their people.
Chinooks tend to get along with most dogs and people. Some may be more aloof with strangers than others, but they should never be overly shy, and should never show aggression. This is not a guardian breed. While a larger Chinook may be intimidating to some based on their size, they should not be counted on to provide "scary dog privilege" or otherwise dissuade potential intruders. Chinooks tend to look as friendly as they act!
